TermDefinition
context the words that are used with a certain word or phrase in writing or speaking
controlling idea in an informational text, the focused message that the author hopes to clearly communicate and explain to the audience; often the point around which the rest of the writing is structured
conventions customs or ways of doing things in writing that are widely accepted and followed (e.g., standard English conventions)
correlative conjunctions pairs of conjunctions, such as either/or
correspondence communication by means of letters or e=mail
craft the writer's intentional use of figurative language, imagery, and detail to create an effect on the reader
debate discussion or argument carried on between two teams or sides
deduction conclusion reached by reasoning
denontation literal meaning of a word or phrase as opposed to an implied or associated idea
dialogue conversation given in a written story or a play
digital resource electronic or computer resource
digital text electronic versions of written texts
direct address the name of the person being directly spoken to
discourse verbal interchange of ideas
draft a version of something written or drawn (such as an essay, document, or plan) that has or will have more than one version
dramatic production a presentation of a play, a piece of music, or other entertainment
drawing conclusions a form of inference in which the reader gathers information, considers the general thoughts or ideas that emerge from the information, and comes to a decision
edit to correct and get ready for publication
empathic the understanding and sharing of the emotions and experiences of another person
endnotes notes placed at the end of the text
