Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) enlargement of the prostate
Depot an area of the body where a substance can accumulate or be stored for later distribution
Endometrium the mucous membrane lining the inner wall or layer of the uterus
Erectile dysfunction (ED) inability of a man to maintain an erection sufficient for satisfying sexual activity
Estrogen any of a group of anabolic sex hormones that promote the development and maintenance of female sexual characteristics
Fallopian tube a narrow tube that connects the ovary to the uterus
Fertilization the process by which a sperm unites with an ovum
Gametes sex cells, or ova and sperm
Mammary gland the milk-producing gland of women
Menopause cessation of menstruation; a natural phenomenon in which a women passes from a reproductive state to a nonreproductive state
Menses the time of menstruation
Negative feedback a self-regulating mechanism in which the output of a system has input or control on the process; in this case, the stimulus results in reactions that reduce the effects of the stimulus
Nocturia urination at night
Oocyte (ovum) the female reproductive germ cell, more commonly known as an egg
Ovaries the female reproductive organs in which ova, or eggs, are produced
Palliative something that brings relief but does not cure
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) inflammation of the female genital tract, accompanied by fever and lower abdominal pain
Progesterone an anabolic sex hormone that stimulates the uterus to prepare for pregnancy
Prostate a gland surrounding the neck of the bladder in males that produces a fluid component of semen
Sperm (plural, spermatozoa) the male reproductive germ cell
Spermatogenesis the development of sperm in the testes
Spermicide an agent that kills sperm
Teratogen any agent that causes abnormal embryonic or fetal development
Testes the male reproductive organs that produce sperm
Testosterone an anabolic sex hormone produced in the testes that stimulates the development of male sexual characteristics
Uterus the organ in the lower abdomen of a women where gestation of a fetus occurs
Amenorrhea absence of menstrual periods
Anabolic steroid synthetic, or human-made, variations of the male sex hormone testosterone
dysfunctional uterine bleeding [DUB] irregular uterine bleeding that occurs in the absence of recognizable pelvic pathology, general medical disease, or pregnancy
dysmenorrhea painful menstruation, typically involving abdominal cramps
endometriosis a condition resulting from the appearance of endometrial tissue outside the uterus and causing pelvic pain.
hypogonadism reduction or absence of hormone secretion or other physiological activity of the gonads (testes or ovaries).
Hysterectomy a surgical operation to remove all or part of the uterus.
Infertility inability to conceive children or young.
Kallmann syndrome a condition characterized by delayed or absent puberty and an impaired sense of smell. This disorder is a form of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, which is a condition resulting from a lack of production of certain hormones that direct sexual development.
Klinefelter syndrome a genetic condition in which a boy is born with an extra X chromosome. Instead of the typical XY chromosomes in men, they have XXY, so this condition is sometimes called XXY syndrome.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age
Pregnancy term used to describe the period in which a fetus develops inside a woman's womb or uterus. Pregnancy usually lasts about 40 weeks, or just over 9 months, as measured from the last menstrual period to delivery.
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) a group of symptoms that occur before the onset of menstruation (eg, bloating, edema, headache, mood swings, and breast discomfort)
Salpingitis inflammation of the fallopian tubes, caused by bacterial infection.
Stein-Leventhal syndrome disorder in women that is characterized by an elevated level of male hormones (androgens) and infrequent or absent ovulation (anovulation).
tubal ligation a surgical procedure for female sterilization which involves severing and tying the fallopian tubes.
vasectomy the surgical cutting and sealing of part of each vas deferens, typically as a means of sterilization.
vaginitis inflammation of the vagina.
