Why were the deaflympics created? There are some really gifted deaf athletes that for many years were not permitted to compete in the Olympics due to their hearing loss. Out of that struggle, they chose not to give up, and instead created their own Olympics, called the Deaflympics.
What hearing loss is required to be able to compete in the deflympics? . an athlete must have at least a 55-decibel loss (in their ear with the most hearing) in order to be eligible
When and where did the first deaflympics occur? The first Deaflympics occurred in 1924 in Paris, France
What are the four focus items of story cohesion? transition,engaging the audience,use of singing space and the ending
What is the transition item? use raised eyebrows to signal the beginning of a new scene or segment
What is the engaging the audience item? make deliberate eye contact with you audience and maintain the eye contact throughout the story (only time eye contact should be broken is when you role shift to a character) and use deliberate enthusiasm
What is the use of signing place item? to make the presentation visually appealing, work on making your signs larger and deliberate
What is the ending item? to end a humorous story, sign the ending very dramatically
What is the importance of transitions? Distinguishes between chunks of info (time signs, topicalization (break into smaller chunks),
What is the importance of engaging the audience? With eye contact, the listener is more attentive to the story. Deliberate enthusiasm will make the story alive and make it more interesting
What is the importance of the use of signing space? to place and locate people, objects, buildings and places
What is the importance of the ending? Story usually has problem and the end is when the solution to that problem is presented
What is an example of transitions form the timber story? Introduces lumber jack then lumberjack going to work and then introducing the forest
What is an example of engaging the audience from the timber story? Signer keeps constant eye contact and had enthusiasm through the story
What is an example of using the sign space from the timber story? Made signs larger and was sure of every sign
What is the ending from the timber story? The lumberjack discovers that the tree is deaf and finger spells timber dramatically and the tree falls
What is the first strategy that can be used to get the Deaf person to tell you what is the sign you need? point to the object
What is the second strategy that can be used to get the Deaf person to tell you what is the sign you need? draw a picture
What is the third strategy that can be used to get the Deaf person to tell you what is the sign you need? list things in category
What is the fourth strategy that can be used to get the Deaf person to tell you what is the sign you need? use opposites
What is the fifth strategy that can be used to get the Deaf person to tell you what is the sign you need? describe/act out
