| main idea | something important that an author wants readers to understand about a topic. (what the text is mostly about) |
| central message | a lesson about life the author of a story wants to share |
| character traits | special qualities of a character (example: shyness, honesty) |
| point of view | the perspective from which a text is written (1st, 2nd or 3rd) |
| summary | a short but complete version of a text |
| text feature | special parts of a text that give additional information or help locate information (example: captions, diagrams, glossaries) |
| key details or supporting details | facts, examples and other pieces of information directly stated in the text |
| plot | the sequence of events in a story |
| context clues | words, phrases or sentences around an unknown word in a text that helps determine the word's meaning (example: definitions, synonyms or synonyms) |
| cause and effect | a text organization that tells about events and explains why they happened |
