Rocket Vocabulary

aerodynamics the study of the interaction of gases (usually air) with objects in motion
air resistance the force of the atmosphere that resists the forward motion of objects
altimeter an apparatus used to determine height altitude
apogee the highest altitude an object (such as a rocket) reaches during flight
ballast something that adds mass in order to improve stability or performance
descent the downward movement of a rocket or object design
dimension a measure of spatial extent such as height, length, or width
drag the force that acts between a moving object and the fluid medium, slowing the motion of the object
fin a winglike projection from the body of a rocket
lift the act or process of rising or raising to a higher position
modification a change of the properties, form, or function
momentum the mass of an object multiplied by its velocity
parachute a light material with a large area used to slow the descent of a falling object
proportion a dimension expressed as a ratio
propulsion the force that moves an object in a desired direction
tangent the ratio of the opposite leg to the angle over the adjacent leg to the angle in a right triangle
variation a change; a measurement of change in data
velocity the speed and direction of an object’s motion
