| Actions | Lower triglyceride levels, increase HDL cholesterol levels. |
| Uses | In conjunction with dietary therapy to treat hypertriglyceridemia ; not recommended with statins |
| Pre med assessment | Tris and CHO levels, liver function before and every 6 months after starting. Blood glucose levels....gemfibrizol (Lopid) may cause moderate hyperglycemia. |
| Admin | Give gemfibrizol (Lopid) 30 minutes before morning and evening meals. Give fenofibrate (Tricor) with meals. |
| Common adverse effects | Nausea, diarrhea, flatulence, bloating, abdominal distress |
| Serious adverse effects | Fatigue, anorexia, nausea, malaise, jaundice, myopathy |
