Niacin
Vitamin B3

| Niacin (Nicotinic acid) | Water soluble B vitamin/ lowers LDLs and triglyceride levels/ histamine release which causes vasodilation. Used for patients at risk for pancreatitis and elevated triglyceride levels. |
| Adverse effects | Flushing, itching, rash, tingling, headache, nausea, gas abdominal discomfort, pain, dizziness, faintness, hypotension |
| Serious adverse effects | Hepatotoxicity, myopathy |
| Need to know | Not recommended for diabetics related to glucose intolerance. |
| Pre med assessment | Serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels, liver function test before and every 6-8 wks, uric acid and glucose levels , BP and HR, GI alterations before therapy. |
| Patient education | Take aspirin 30 min before each dose. |
| Complications | Hyperglycemia, hepatotoxicity, hyperuricemia |
| Nursing admin | Administer PO in tab or liquid form. 3 times per day w/ or after meals. Time released tablets one in the evening. |
