Niacin

Vitamin B3

QuestionAnswer
Niacin (Nicotinic acid) Water soluble B vitamin/ lowers LDLs and triglyceride levels/ histamine release which causes vasodilation. Used for patients at risk for pancreatitis and elevated triglyceride levels.
Adverse effects Flushing, itching, rash, tingling, headache, nausea, gas abdominal discomfort, pain, dizziness, faintness, hypotension
Serious adverse effects Hepatotoxicity, myopathy
Need to know Not recommended for diabetics related to glucose intolerance.
Pre med assessment Serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels, liver function test before and every 6-8 wks, uric acid and glucose levels , BP and HR, GI alterations before therapy.
Patient education Take aspirin 30 min before each dose.
Complications Hyperglycemia, hepatotoxicity, hyperuricemia
Nursing admin Administer PO in tab or liquid form. 3 times per day w/ or after meals. Time released tablets one in the evening.
