| Term | Definition |

| Headings | an inscription, headline, or title at the beginning (as of a letter or chapter). Helps the reader identify the main idea for that section of the text. |
| Hyperbole | extreme exaggeration or overstatement. |
| Idiom | an expression that can't be taken literally, but has accepted meaning. |
| implicit | understood even though it's not directly stated in the text. |
| inference/infer | deduce or conclude information from evidence and reasoning rather than from explicit statements. |
| irony | the figurative term for the disconnect between what appears to happen or what is apparently being said and the actual truth or reality. |
