| alliteration | The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words. |
| Analyze | to break down and look at each part. |
| Antonym | a word that has the opposite meaning. |
| Argument | a coherent series of reasons, statements, or facts intended to support or establish a point of view. |
| Author's Purpose | the reason for writing; to inform, persuade, or entertain. |
| Autobiography | The story of someone's life, written by that person. |
| Bias | a personal and sometimes unreasoned judgement. |
| Biography | a writer's account of some other person's life. |
| Caption | a short description or title of an illustration in a text |
| Cause/Effect | cause is the action that makes something happen; effect is the something that happens. |
| Central Idea | the most important idea about a topic that a writer or speaker conveys. It may be expressed in a topic sentence or implied. |
| Chronological Order | to arrange events in the order that they occured. |
| Cite | to quote by way of example, authority, or proof. |
| Claim | a writer's position on an issue. |
| Climax | the greatest point of interest in the story; usually right before the conflict is resolved. |
