Matching Terms and Definitions

Schema a “computer file” in your brain; prior knowledge
Vocalization moving one’s lips while reading
Root basic stem of a word derived primarily from Latin and Greek
Regression the eyes going back and rereading text already read
Recall a review of what has been read
Previewing first stage of reading
Predict to make educated guesses about what comes next as you read
Outline quick organized display of key ideas and essential details using Roman numerals, letters, numbers, and indentation
Mnemonics techniques to help your brain recall information by using mental “tricks”
Metacognition knowing about knowing; knowledge of thought processes and ability to direct them
Mapping visually condensing/diagramming material to show relationships, using lines, circles, and other visual cues
Literal level at this level you may answer detail questions asking who, what, when, and where
Interpretive level at this level you make assumptions and draw conclusions based on the facts and clues in the passage
Inference meaning that is not directly stated but suggested through clues ("reading between the lines")
Fixation a pause that eyes make while reading a line of text
Etymology study of word origins
Detail specifics that support the main idea; test questions that measure understanding of material directly stated
Cornell system system of note-taking with two columns, one for key words and one for details
Annotating method of highlighting main ideas, significant details, and key terms using a system of notations in the margins of the book or passage you're reading
Analogy comparison that measures your word knowledge and ability to see relationships
