Forces & Motion
Forces and Momentum Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Force | a push or a pull on object that may change the motion of the object |
| Balanced Force | Forces are equal on all sides; DOES equal zero Newtons; an object's motion WILL NOT CHANGE |
| Unbalanced Force | Forces are not equal; Does NOT equal zero Newtons; an object's motion WILL CHANGE |
| Net Force | the overall force on an object ; |
| Newtons | the units used for force (N) |
| Mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| Gravity | a force that pulls all objects that mass toward one another |
| Friction | a force that resists motion when two surfaces are touching |
| Motion | any change in the location of an object |
| Isaac Newton | the scientist credited with the three laws of motion |
| Newton's 1st Law | An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion; until acted upon by an outside force |
| Newton's 2nd Law | The force of an object is equal to its mass multiplied by its acceleration |
| Newton's 3rd Law | For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction |
| Inertia | an object's tendency to resist a change in motion |
| Speed | the distance an object travels |
| Average Speed | the total distance an object travels divided by the total time traveled |
| Momentum | Mass of an object in motion |
| Formula for Force | Force=mass X acceleration |
| Formula for Momentum | Momentum= mass X velocity |
| Formula for Work | Work=force X distance |
