lipid lowering agents

bile acid sequestrants ( colestipol, cholestyramine) bind bile acids in intestinal lumen and prevent their reabsorption, may relieve pruitis in patients with cholestasis and bile salt accumulation
bile acids sequestrants ( colestipol, cholestyramine) adverse effects--> constipation bloating heart burn diarrhea vitamin K/folic acid deficiences
bile acid sequestrants ( colestipol, cholestyramine) interactions--> digitalis, thiazides, warfarin, tetracycline, thyroxine
gemfibrozil increases peripheral catabolism of VLDL and chylomicrons by increasing lipoprotein lipase
gemfibrozil reduces hepatic synthesis of cholesterol
gemfibrozil adverse effects--> rashes, GI symptoms, myopathy, arrythmias, hypokalemia
niacin reduces plasma VLDL by inhibiting synthesis, markedly decreases plasma triglycerides, HDL levels increase
niacin adverse effects--> flushing and ithching or burning feeling in the skin; increase transaminase activity;hyperglycemia; GI disturbances; peptic ulcer; reanl effects; and macular edema
statins competitevly inhibit HMG-COa reductase in cholesterol synthesis; results in increased hepatic uptake of plasma cholesterol by increasing number of LDL receptors
statins adverse effects--> myositis, hepatotoxicity, and elevations in aminotransferases
