| Analgesic | a drug that relieves pain |
| Antipyretic | a drug that prevents or reduces fever |
| Arthroplasty | surgical reconstruction or replacement of a joint |
| Bone fracture | a break or rupture of a bone |
| Bone marrow | a fatty network of connective tissue that fills the cavities of bones |
| Cancellous bone | a meshwork of spongy bone typically found at the core of the vertebral bones in the spine and the ends of long bones; also called spongy bone |
| Compact bone | rigid bone, which makes up most of the skeleton; also known as cortical bone |
| Cyclooxygenase (COX) | either of two related enzymes that control prostaglandin production |
| Euphoria | the feeling or state of intense excitement and happiness |
| Fascicles | a bundle such as muscle fibers |
| Gout | a painful form of arthritis characterized by defective metabolism of uric acid |
| Ligament | a fibrous connective tissue that connects to bones |
| Miosis | constriction of the pupil of the eye |
| Motor nerve | a nerve carrying impulses from the brain or spinal cord to a muscle or gland |
| Muscle fiber | muscle cell |
| Neuromuscular junction | the junction between a nerve fiber and the muscle it supplies |
| Opioid analgesic | an analgesic medication that activates opioid receptors |
| Osteoarthritis (OA) | degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone |
| Osteoporosis | a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile from loss of bone density and poor microarchitecture |
| Prostaglandin | a mediator responsible for the features of inflammation, such as swelling, pain, stiffness, redness, and warmth |
| (Bone) Resorption | removal of osseous tissue and osteoclasts |
| Reye syndrome | a life-threatening metabolic disorder in young children of uncertain cause. Aspirin use may precipitate the syndrome |
| Skeletal muscle | muscle that is connected to the skeleton to form part of the mechanical system that moves the limbs and other parts of the body |
| Skeletal system | the hard structure (bones and cartilages) that provides a frame for the body |
| Spongy bone | meshwork of spongy bone typically found at the core of vertebral bones in the spine and the ends of long bones, also known as cancellous bone |
| Subchondral bone | bone located below the cartilage, particularly within a joint |
| Synovium | a thin membrane in synovial (freely moving) joints that lines the joint capsule and secretes synovial fluid |
| Tendon | a flexible but inelastic cord of strong fibrous collagen tissue that attaches a muscle to a bone |
| Uric acid | the water-insoluble end product of purine metabolism; deposition of uric acid as crystals in the joints and kidneys causes gout |
