Figurative Language

Figurative language and poetic devices

TermDefinition
What is a simile? a comparison between two unlike things that uses the words like or as
What is a metaphor? a comparison between two unlike things that does NOT use the words like or as. Usually makes a statement that something is something else.
What is personification? Giving human qualities to something that is not human.
What is hyperbole? An extreme exaggeration
What is alliteration? The repetition of the same beginning sound in two or more words that are close together.
What is onomatopoeia? Sound words - words that sound like how they are said
What is an idiom? A saying that doesn't mean exactly what it says. It has another meaning. (You're driving me up a wall is an example.)
What type of figurative language is included in this sentence? The bee went BUZZING by my head. Onomatopoeia
What type of figurative language is included in this sentence? Mr. Edwards is a real pig; he ate 10 pieces of pizza at lunch! Metaphor
