| rhyme scheme | pattern of rhyme in a poem (ex: AABB, ABAB) |
| lines | one complete line of text |
| stanza | group of lines in poetry (like a paragraph) |
| free verse | a poem that doesn't rhyme |
| lyrical poem | songlike poem that has rhythm and sometimes rhyme |
| rhyme | words that have the same ending sound |
| rhythm | the beat |
| poetry | a type of literature that has lines, stanzas, rhythm, rhyme |
| simile | compares two things using "like" or "as" |
| metaphor | compares two things but does NOT use like or as |
| alliteration | words that start with the same sound close together |
| onomatopoeia | words that sound like the sound |
| hyperbole | an exaggerated statement |
| idiom | word combinations that have a different meaning than the literal meanings of each word or phrase |
| figurative language | words that don't mean what they say |
| author's purpose | why an author writes |
| personification | giving human characteristics to something that is not human |
