Thermal Energy

QuestionAnswer
energy What is the ability to cause change (or do Work) in physical Science called?
temperature This term refers to the measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles of an object...
thermal energy What term refers to the total kinetic energy of all of the particles in an object?
heat This term is often confused with temperature. It is the energy that is transferred between objects due to a temperature difference.
specific heat What is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of that material by 1 degree Celsius?
density The mass per unit volume of a substance is solved by the equation D = Mass/ Volume. What does D stand for?
conduction What kind of heat transfer occurs when objects with different temperatures are touching?
convection What kind of heat transfer occurs when the transfer of thermal energy occurs in a fluid (gas or liquid) by the movements of warmer and cooler fluids?
radiation What is the transfer of energy by waves (i.e. electromagnetic waves like light and x-rays an infrared waves, and microwaves, etc)?
thermal insulator What material block thermal energy and cause thermal energy moves through very slowly
mechanical energy the sum of the potential and kinetic energy in a system of objects
thermodynamics the study of the relationships between thermal energy, heat and work.
1st law of thermodynamics 1st Law or 2nd Law? Thermal (Heat) Energy is a form of energy and under the law of conservation of energy, Thermal (Heat) energy cannot be created or destroyed.
second law of thermodynamics 1st Law or 2nd Law ? Energy spreads from Hot to Cold Regions. Entropy increases.
What are the three Temperature units of measurement? Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin,
What is the temperature that The Kelvin scale is based on? Absolute Zero.
What is Absolute Zero? It is the temperature where all motion stops. -273.15 degrees Celsius.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
