Sound Vocabulary

Mr. Hoeve's Science of Sound Vocabulary 1

TermDefinition
sound wave a pressure wave or vibration that travels through a gas, liquid, or solid.
vibrate to move back and forth
echo a reflection or bouncing back of a sound wave
frequency how many waves (∿ = 1 wave) there are in one second
hertz the unit of measure for sound waves
wave length (symbol = λ) how far it is from the top of one sound wave to the top of the next one
decibel (symbol = dB) a measure of how loud a sound is (a whisper is about 30 and regular talking about 60)
pitch how high or low a sound is
absorb to take in (like a sponge sucks up water)
amplify to make stronger
