Science Measurements

for quick quiz on 1/26

Definition/QuestionTerm/Answer
What are the two types of instrument? Mechanical and electronic
Any man-made device a scientist uses that includes a standard for measuring Instrument
Include a graduated scale that shows the unit of the dimension the instrument is measuring in by marking found directly on the measurements Mechanical Instrument
Use a digital display that (automatically) shows the abbreviation for the units of the dimension being measured Electronic Instrument
The world's oldest known unit of measurement; the distance from elbow to fingertip (comes from the latin word cubitum, meaning forearm) Cubit
Any measurable aspect of something Dimension
A known quantity of a dimension with a value of one that everyone agrees to use for comparison Standard
The name and size of a portion of a dimension that has the value of 1 Unit
Occurs when an observer imposes his or her presuppositions on the observational results Observational Bias
Comparing some aspect of an object to an appropriate measuring standard Measurement
The individual spacings and marking on a scale that shows the units of the dimension that the mechanical instrument measures Graduated Scale
Used in America; has multiple base units per dimension Imperial/Standard system
Used almost everywhere in the world; has one base unit per dimension Metric/International System
An agreed-upon quantity that equals 1 Base Unit
What are the two parts of a measurement? Number and unit
What are the job(s) of the number and base unit? The number tells us the quantity of units; units tell us that the preceding number is a measurement, indicates the dimension being measured, and identifies the size of the dimension
What is the metric system's base unit for the dimensions of length? Meter
What is the metric system's base unit for the dimensions of volume? Liter
What is the metric system's base unit for the dimensions of mass/weight? Gram
What is the metric system's base unit for the dimensions of temperature? Celsius
What is the metric system's base unit for the dimensions of time? Second
What is the difference between a dimension and a unit? A dimension is the aspect of the thing you are measuring, and a unit is what you use to measure that aspect
What is the cubit and how does it validate the historical accuracy of the Bible? Cubit is based off of the length between the elbow and the fingertip; proves the Bible's historical accuracy b/c it only had a 6% difference among many different civilizations around the 100 years after Noah's arm. They had to come from the same place.
How are the two systems of measurement different? The standard system uses fractions for smaller measures, the metric system used decimals
