TermDefinition
Partial pressure The pressure of an individual gas within a mixture of other gases. Oxygen has a partial pressure in the air at sea level of approx 21%. Example: Partial Pressure of oxygen in air versus lungs
Diaphragm A sheath of muscles that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdomen. It is responsible for 75% of the change in size of the thoracic cavity.
Internal Intercostal Muscles Muscles that attach the ribs together. Are responsible for expiration of as much carbon dioxide as possible during exercise.
External Intercostal Muscles Muscles that attach the ribs together. Are responsible for expanding the thoracic cavity during inspiration both at rest and during exercise.
Pressure Gradient A difference in air pressures from one area to another. When in existence air will move from a place of high pressure to low pressure. Example: Lungs and outside air
Parietal Pleura The outside layer of the lungs. Responsible to protect the lungs from damage.
Visceral Pleura The inside layer covering the lungs. Responsible for protecting the lungs from damage.
Hemoglobin A protein found in erythrocytes. Associates and dissociates with oxygen to deliver oxygen from the lungs to the tissues. Also carries iron throughout our body.
