Unit 1 and 2 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
antonym context clue the opposite of the unfamiliar word is given as a clue.
author's purpose the author's main reason for writing. "The author uses descriptive words in this paragraph in order to..." "The author includes quotes in paragraphs 1 and 2 because..."
characterize to describe the nature or feature of a character in the story. "This sentence helps characterize _____ as_____"
conclude to arrive at a judgment or opinion by reasoning "Based on this sentence, the reader can conclude that_____."
conflict struggle between two opposing forces; it could be external or internal. INTERNAL CONFLICT takes place within the mind of the character. EXTERNAL CONFLICT is one in which the character struggles against some outside force, such as another person.
descriptive language/sensory language uses images that appeal to the five senses; it's portrait of a person, place, or object in words
figurative language writing or speech that is not meant to be taken literally. It includes SIMILE, METAPHOR, PERSONIFICATION, and HYPERBOLE
first person point of view the story is told by a character who uses the pronoun "I" "By telling the story from the first person point of view, the author helps the reader understand_____."
metaphor points out the similarity between two unlike things without using the words "like" or "as"
summary short, clear description of the main ideas of the topic or narrative. Effective summaries do not include opinion or bias.
