Chapter 9 S African vocabulary

What is a veld? A word used by South Africans for open lands.
What is an escarpment? A long steep slope that usually separates lands of different heights.
What is acid rain? Rain with increased acidity that is caused by air pollutants and other environmental factors.
What was the Dutch East India Company? A Dutch trading company founded in 1602 to protect Dutch trading interests in the Indian Ocean.
What is the African National Congress (ANC)? Organization formed from native Africans to work for equal treatment of the non-white population.
What are homelands? 10 areas in South African where most black Africans were forcefully relocated during apartheid
What is an embargo? A government order stopping trade with another country.
What is the Truth and Reconciliation Commission? An organization formed by the South African government to investigate the wrongs and abuses during apartheid
What is the African Union (AU)? An organization established in 2002 to help unify the countries of Africa in socioeconomic development
What is the National Development Plan? A South African government entity created in 2012 with the goal to reduce and end poverty and inequality by 2030.
What is the Rand? The currency of South Africa
