Chemical Bonds Vocab
Atom | The building blocks of matter; make up EVERYTHING. |
Element | A substance made up of one certain type of atom. |
Compound | Are formed when different elements bond to create a molecule. |
Molecule | Are formed when different OR same elements bond. *All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds* |
Valence Electrons | Electrons on the outer shell of an atom. |
Energy Levels | Layers of the electron cloud - the shells. |
Octet Rule | An atom is most stable when there are eight valence electrons. |
Covalent Bonds | Formed by SHARING a pair of electrons. |
Ionic Bonds | Formed by TRANSFER of electrons. |
Ion | A charged particle. *Ions of OPPOSITE charge (-), (+)attract each other* |
Covalent or Ionic? Formed between ONLY non-metals | Covalent. |
Covalent or Ionic? Form Ions, a charged particle | Ionic. |
Covalent or Ionic? Ions of OPPOSITE charge attract each other, forming the bond | Ionic. |
Covalent or Ionic? Exist as solids, liquids and gasses. | Covalent. |
Covalent or Ionic? Exist as solids at room temperature | Ionic. |
Covalent or Ionic? Cannot dissolve in water | Covalent. |
Covalent or Ionic? High melting and boiling points | Ionic. |
Covalent or Ionic? Always Exothermic | Ionic. |
Covalent or Ionic? Flammable and brittle | Covalent. |
