Chemical Bonds Vocab

Atom The building blocks of matter; make up EVERYTHING.
Element A substance made up of one certain type of atom.
Compound Are formed when different elements bond to create a molecule.
Molecule Are formed when different OR same elements bond. *All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds*
Valence Electrons Electrons on the outer shell of an atom.
Energy Levels Layers of the electron cloud - the shells.
Octet Rule An atom is most stable when there are eight valence electrons.
Covalent Bonds Formed by SHARING a pair of electrons.
Ionic Bonds Formed by TRANSFER of electrons.
Ion A charged particle. *Ions of OPPOSITE charge (-), (+)attract each other*
Covalent or Ionic? Formed between ONLY non-metals Covalent.
Covalent or Ionic? Form Ions, a charged particle Ionic.
Covalent or Ionic? Ions of OPPOSITE charge attract each other, forming the bond Ionic.
