Structural Drafting

TermDefinition
compressive strength A measure of an object's ability to withstand force or pressure.
dead load The weight of the building or structure.
fabrication shop A shop in which materials such as steel are cut to specific lengths and processed.
finite element analysis (FEA) A process in which computer programs are used to assign materials to computer models of structural members and then test them under various loads.
gage lines The lines along which rivets are placed.
live load Any weight that a building must bear that is not part of the weight of the building itself, such as snow or furniture.
laminating Cutting material into thin slabs and then gluing them together.
load The weights or pressure borne by the structure.
pitch The slope of a roof; the rise relative to the run.
prestressed concrete Concrete in which the reinforcing bars are stretched before the concrete is poured over them.
reinforced concrete Concrete in which steel bars have been embedded.
truss A configuration of structural elements that adds strength to a structure.
