What is the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s ? Unknown cause with possible genetic contribution. Beta amyloid plaques develop throughout the brain
What are some modifiable risk factors of Alzheimer’s? HTN, DM, obesity, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, hypothyroidism, Afib
What are some non modifiable risk factors of Alzheimer’s? Age >65, stroke, metabolic syndrome, depression, severe head trauma, Down’s syndrome, African American, APOE gene polymorphism
What are some social factors that contribute to AD? Isolation, decreased cognitive stim, decreased level of education
True or false. AD is a diagnosis of exclusion. There are no tests to confirm the disease True
What are the hallmark signs of AD? Cortical atrophy, beta amyloid plaques, tau proteins (all confirmed post mortem)
How is AD different from dementia? - AD: specific brain disease that accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases - Dementia: general term for sx like decline in memory, reasoning, or other thinking
What are some early signs of AD? Word finding difficulty, mood swings, impaired attention, confusion, memory issues, poor problem solving, rapid changes in awareness of place and time, visual agnostics, expressive aphasia, etc
What is the goal of PT for Alzheimer’s? Support and safety: take note of AMS, keep commands/ cues simple, don’t overstimulate, don’t leave unsupervised, calm/ reassuring demeanor
