Designs Used in HD Research (Type of Design: Def, Strengths, Weaknesses)

QuestionAnswer
General Designs: Correlational Observe variables as they exist in the world and determine their relations; Behavior is measured as it occurs naturally; Cannot determine cause & effect
General Designs: Experimental Manipulate independent variable and determine effect on dependent variable; Control of variables allows conclusions about cause & effect; Work is often laboratory-based, which can be artificial
Developmental Designs: Longitudinal One group of people is tested repeatedly as they develop; Only way to chart an individual's development & look at the stability of behavior over time; Expensive, participants drop out, and repeated testing can distort performance
Developmental Designs: Cross-sectional People of different ages are tested at the same time; Convenient- solves all problems associated with longitudinal studies; Cannot study stability of behavior,, cohort effects complicate interpretations of differences between groups
Developmental Designs: Sequantial Multiple groups o.people tested over time, based on either multiple longitudinal or cross-sectional Dzs;Best way to address limitation o.single L and C-S Dzs; +expensive & time-consuming,, may not completely solve limitations of L & C-S Dzs
