Holistic | Model of care which draws upon knowledge of human biology, psychology, and the social systems of family, friends and community as the foundation of practice |
Psychopathology | Disease of the mind |
Psychosocial adaptations | Ability to perceive reality and respond in a way that supports one’s own emotional and physical well-being and that of others in the social environment |
Psychosocial maladaptation | Result of ineffective coping with disordered perception or cognition resulting in tension and distress |
Primary gain | Relief from emotional conflict and freedom from anxiety that a person achieves by using defense mechanisms |
Secondary gain | An external gain derived from an illness such as attention, disability benefits, monetary gain, or release of responsibility |
Somatization | Behavioral expression of emotions or needs through the body |
Insight | Appropriate understanding of one’s feelings and behavior |
Adaptation | Adjustment to a stressor |
Somatosensory Amplification | Tendency to experience sensations as intense and disturbing |
