Force and Motion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Speed | The distance that an object travels |
| Velocity | The speed that an object travels in a particular direction |
| Acceleration | Rate at which velocity changes |
| Force | A pull or push |
| Net Force | Total of all forces acting on an object |
| Free Body Diagrams | Used to show relative magnitude and direction of all forces acting upon an object in a given situation |
| Normal Force | Contact between two forces |
| Friction | A force that opposes motion between any surfaces that are touching |
| Static Friction | A type of friction that acts on objects when they're resting over a surface |
| Sliding Friction | A type of friction that acts on objects when they're sliding over a surface. It's weaker than static friction |
| Fluid Friction | A type of friction that acts on objects that are moving through a liquid |
| Normal | Perpendicular |
| Gravity | A force of attraction between objects, due to their mass |
| Mass | Amount of matter in an object |
| Weight | A measure of gravitational force on an object |
| Terminal Velocity | Constant velocity |
| Newton's 1st Law of Motion (Law of Inertia) | An object at rest or in motion will stay at rest or in motion unless an unbalanced force acts upon it. |
| Newton's 2nd Law of Motion | Acceleration is inversely related to mass |
| Newton's 3rd Law of Motion | Every action has an opposite or equal reaction |
| Inertia | Tendency of all objects to resist any change in motion |
