Solutions & Mixtures
SF U 6 Lessons 4 & 5
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| mixture | a combination of two or more substances, each keep their properties and can be easily separated |
| solution | a mixture where a substance dissolved evenly in another, it has the same composition throughout. |
| solubility | ability of a substance to dissolve and make a solution |
| solute | Substance being dissolved |
| solvent | A liquid substance capable of dissolving other substances |
| physical change | a change in a substance that can be size/shape or change in state that does not make a new substance |
| evaporation | A change from a liquid to a gas that occurs at a temperature lower than boiling point |
| condensation | the change in state from a gas to a liquid |
| ingredient | a single part of a mixture |
| properties | characteristics that can be observed or measured, ex. mass or volume |
| evidence of chemical change | gives off a gas (bubbles), changes color (not always), temperature change, forms a new substance [precipitate] |
| dissolve | to form a solution by mixing evenly |
| chemical change | any change that causes a new substance to be formed |
| physical properties of matter | Color, Odor, Shape, Hardness, Texture, Density, Volume, Mass, Weight |
| density | the amount of mass in a certain volume of matter |
| volume | The amount of space an object takes up or occupies |
| All solutions are mixtures | Not all mixtures are solutions! |
| An alloy is a | mixture of metals. |
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| gas | Matter that has no definite shape or volume. |
| Conservation of Mass | A law that states matter cannot be created or destroyed. |
