Figurative Language

| 1. figurative language | a way of creating images with words |
| 2. simile | the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind; you use “like” or “as” in the comparison |
| 3. metaphor | use two nouns and compare or contrast them to one another; Unlike simile, you don’t use “like” or “as” in the comparison |
| 4. onomatopoeia | the use of words that sound like what they mean |
| 5. personification | giving human characteristics to something nonhuman |
| 6. analogy | comparison in order to show a similarity in some respect |
| 7. idiom | words, phrases, or expressions that cannot be taken literally |
| 8. alliteration | repetition of the same sounds at the beginning of two or more adjacent words or stresses syllables |
| 9. imagery | use of language to create mental images and sensory impressions |
| 10. sensory detail | detail in a writing that describes what is seen, heard, smelled, tasted or touched |
