Unit 3 Waves

TermDefinition
waves A repeating disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another.
Energy Ability to do work.
Mechanical waves A wave that travels through a medium due to the motion of matter.
Amplitude The vertical distance between a peak and valley and the resting position in a transverse wave.
wavelength Measures the length of one cycle
Frequency Number of waves in a set amount of time.
speed The rate at which a wave travels
refraction A change of direction that light undergoes when it enters a medium.
absorb Take in or soak up energy or a liquid or other substance by chemical or physical actions.
Transmission Cause something to pass on from one place to another.
Electromagnetic waves Waves created as a result of vibrations between electric fields and magnetic fields
medium For waves
Sound wave A longitudinal wave that is caused by vibrations through a material medium.
