| groundwater | water that fills the cracks and spaces in underground soil and rock layers |
| water cycle | The continual movement of water among Earth's atmosphere, oceans, and land surface through evaporation, condensation, and precipitation |
| transpiration | Evaporation of water from the leaves of a plant |
| precipitation | Any form of water that falls from clouds and reaches Earth's surface. |
| tributary | A stream or river that flows into a larger river |
| watershed | An ecosystem where all water runoff drains into a single body of water |
| river basin | The area of land drained by a river and its branches. |
| reservoir | A lake that stores water for human use. |
| aquifer | An underground formation that contains groundwater |
| permeable | penetrable; porous; allowing liquids or gas to pass through |
| impermeable | Impassable, not allowing passage through (such as by a liquid) |
| potable | suitable for drinking |
| headwaters | The source of a river |
| mouth of a river | the place where a river empties into a larger body of water |
| flood plain | the flat, wide area of land along a river |
