Reading and Writing Informational Texts

| headings | words printed in bold that divide the text into sections |
| homophone | a word that has the same sound but a different meaning as another word |
| index | an alphabetical listing of names and topics along with page numbers; located in back of a book |
| sidebar | a box of text that gives you side information related to the topic of the text |
| subtitle | in a piece of writing is a second title which is often longer and explains more than the main title |
| text features | include all the components of a story or article that are not the main body of text |
| audience | group of people or a person that reads a text |
| author's purpose | the reason or intention an author has for writing a particular text |
| author's viewpoint | the thoughts or beliefs that an author has about a topic or issue |
| controlling idea | the author's main idea; what the author wants you to know about the topic |
| organizational structure | design the author has chosen to best convey the information |
| summary | a brief statement of the main points of something |
| thesis statement | a short statement, usually one sentence, that summarizes or states the main idea of an essay and is developed, supported, and explained in the text with examples and evidence |
