Matter

TermDefinition
atom the smallest unit of an element that has the properties of that element (related word: atomic)
element a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions
substance the physical matter of which living or nonliving things are composed
mixture a combination of two or more substances that do not combine chemically
homogeneous a substance in which all of the parts are the same throughout; uniform distribution
heterogeneous a substance in which the parts are clearly different shapes and colors; different throughout; not uniform
physical property a characteristic that can be observed, such as texture, color, odor, melting point, boiling point, density, or measured such as mass, length, volume, that is used to describe matter and can be observed or measured without changing its composition
chemical property a characteristic of a substance that is measurable or observable during a chemical reaction; includes pH, heat of combustion, reactivity, etc.
malleability the ability of a material to be pressed or beaten into a thin sheet or to be shaped without breaking
metal element on the right of the periodic table; good conductor, high density, shiny, malleable
nonmetal element on the left of the periodic table; poor electrical conductor, dull, brittle and tend to accept electrons easily
metalloid found on the stair step of the periodic table; these element exhibit both metallic and nonmetallic properties
compound a chemical combination of two or more elements
evaporation the process in which matter changes from a liquid to a gas (related word: evaporate)
condensation the process by which a gas changes into a liquid
mass the amount of matter in an object
matter Material that has mass and takes up some amount of space. The stuff that all objects and substances in the universe are made of.
density an object's mass divided by its volume; a measure of how many particles are packed together into a certain amount of space (related word: dense)
chemical change a chemical reaction; a process that changes substances into new substances (related word: chemical reaction)
physical change a change in matter that does not affect its chemical composition
properties characteristics that help us identify or classify matter
conductivity how well a substance allows heat or electricity to flow through it
molecule two or more combined atoms that are the smallest particle of a substance that keeps the properties of the substance
volume the space matter occupies (takes up)
luster how well a substance reflects light, shiny means lots of reflection, dull means little reflection
precipitate a solid that forms when two solutions are mixed

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
