Landforms

TermDefinition
Canyon a deep, narrow valley with steep sides
Volcano A weak spot in the crust where magma has come to the surface
Plateau A large area of flat land elevated high above sea level
Butte a raised, flat area of land with steep cliffs
Mountain land with steep sides that rises sharply (1,000 feet or more) from surrounding land; generally larger and more rugged than a hill
Island a piece of land surrounded by water
Peninsula A piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides.
Valley an area of low land between hills or mountains
Isthmus A narrow strip of land connecting two larger land areas
Desert An extremely dry area with little water and few plants
