Unit 1 Vocabulary MM

This is a list of the vocabulary terms for Unit 1

TermDefinition
Setting The time and the place that a story takes place
Mood The feeling that a piece of writing creates with the reader
Characters The people in a story
Character Traits Things that help identify certain things about the characters
Conflict When the main character struggles with either an internal or external conflict. This is the first element of the plot.
Internal Conflict A conflict that happens between the character and themself
External Conflict A conflict between the main character and an outside force
Rising Action What happens in a story that leads up to the most exciting part. This is the second element of the plot.
Climax The most exciting part of the story. This is the third element of the plot.
Falling Action The events that follow the climax of the story. This is the fourth element of the plot.
Resolution The last of the five elements of the plot. This is where the conflict is resolved.
Plot The most important part of a story. The sequence of events where we learn about the characters, the setting, and the moral.
Moral The lesson that is to learned from the story.
Cause/Effect An action with a reaction
Point of View The perspective from which the story is told. Lets the reader know who is telling the story.
First Person Point of View Uses the 'I' or 'We' Pronoun
Second Person Point of View Is told through the pronoun 'You'
Third Person Point of View Uses the 'he', 'she', and 'they' pronouns
Metaphor Comparing two unlike things by using 'like' or 'as' She is as pretty as an angel.
Simile Comparing two unlike things by using 'is'. She is an angel.
Personification Giving human-like qualities to non-human things. The trees danced in the sky.
Hyperbole Exaggerated claims that aren't true. I'm so tired I could sleep for 1,000 years.
Short Story A story will a fully developed theme but shorter than a novel
Theme The main idea of a story.
Author's Purpose The reason for the story, plus the main idea. Reason + Main Idea =Author's Purpose
Foreshadowing When the writer gives a hint of what will happen in the story
Inference Figuring out what something means based off using context clues, text evidence, and background knowledge.
What are the 5 W's Who: Who the story is about What: What the story is about When: When did the story happen Where: Where did the story take place Why: Why did the story happen
Cognate Words that are similar in both Spanish and English
Personal Narrative Story based off of someone's life told in the first person.
Omniscient Third Person Point of View Narrator shows what all the characters are doing and thinking
