Vocabulary WordDescription
affix A prefix or suffix added to a root word to change meaning or part of speech
analogy A comparison of items based on their relationship
author's perspective The author's opinions and beliefs
author's purpose The author's reason for writing
character development The way a character changes throughout a literary text
conflict A struggle or battle a character experiences
context clues Hints an author gives to help define an unknown word
conventions Using spelling, capitalization, grammar, and punctuation to help make writing clear and understandable
evidence Proof found within text
genre Categories of literature
inference A conclusion made by using background knowledge and clues from the story
informational text A nonfiction piece of writing that informs the reader about a specific topic
literary devices Figurative language used to make writing more interesting
literary text A fictional piece of writing that tells a story or entertains
