TermDefinition
circulatory system a very efficient system by which blood is transported throughout the body.
heart the chief organ of the circulatory system.
chest cavity the heart is located in the blank where it is protected by your ribs and your breastbone.
four chambers blood flows through the blank of the heart. these blanks are made up mostly of muscle. since the heart is mostly, it often is called the heart muscle.
veins blood that enters the hear is carried there in blood vessels called blank.
arteries blood that leaves the heart is carried out in vessels called blank.
atrium the upper chamber of each pair of rooms, into which blood flows from the body, is called the blank.
ventricle the lower chamber of each pair, from which the blood is pumped back to the body, is called the blank. the blanks are larger and thicker than the atria.
valves between the upper and lower chambers of each side are blanks that allow blood to pass from the upper to the lower chambers. these are one-way blanks. the blood can flow only in one direction through them.
right atrium the blank, is the upper chamber of the right side of the heart. the blank is separated from the ventricle, or lower chamber, by a one-way valve. it prevents blood from flowing into the blank after it has flowed into the ventricle.
valve a blank is a movable part that opens out
aorta from the left ventricle, the blood is pumped from the heart through a large artery called the blank. from there blood is moved throughout the entire body.
arterioles the blanks lead into very tiny, very slender vessels.
capillaries the walls of the blanks are very thin. blood passes through the walls of the blanks. the blanks connect with the smallest of veins, called venules.
venules the blanks, in turn, then collect into larger vessels, the veins.
epinephrine
blood a liquid tissue consisting of fifty-five percent plasma.
plasma blank is a yellowish liquid in the blood in which cells are suspended. the amount of fluid in the body may very somewhat from time to time.
red corpuscles one of the elements developed in plasma. blanks are the cells that contain hemoglobin.
hemoglobin the blank of red blood cells unites with oxygen. in this way oxygen is carried to the body cells.
white corpuscles in the plasma are cells called white blood cells, or blanks. these as well as the red blood cells, are manufactured by the body. when they are needed, blanks are manufactured in greater amounts than usual.
platelets in the plasma of the blood are very small cells called blanks. these cells are used in the clotting of the blood. they work with proteins and other substances in the blood to give your blood the ability to clot.
lymph vessels this is a fluid that flows in vessels called blank. part of the work of blank is to help the blood carry materials to the cells they need.
lymph nodes as lymph passes through a blank, the blank filters out much of the disease-causing bacteria, or germs.
Dr. William Harvey discovered how blood circulates.
