| Primary dentin | The bulk of dentin in the crown and root of tooth ~ Composed of mantle and circumpulpal dentin ~ S curve of dentinal tubules through primary and secondary dentin ~ Forms the body of the tooth |
| Secondary dentin | Develops after crown of the tooth is in clinical occlusal function and the roots are nearly completed ~ In molar teeth, more secondary dentin is deposited on the roof and floor of the coronal pulp chamber than on the lateral walls |
| Tertiary dentin | dentin formed in response to trauma or stimulus. It is formed to protect the pulp. ~ Reactionary/Response and Reparative ~ Forms only at sites of odontoblastic activation ~ At times resembles bone more than dentin and is termed osteodentin |
