The Metric System
Measurements, metric units and prefixes

| Unit | A word or symbol that comes after a number to explain what we are measuring |
| Mass | The amount of matter in an object |
| Length | End-to-end distance of an object |
| Volume | How much space something takes up |
| Metric unit for mass | grams (g) |
| Metric unit for length | meters (m) |
| Metric unit for volume | liters (L) |
| Metric unit for time | seconds (s) |
| Kilo- | A prefix meaning 1,000 |
| Centi- | A prefix meaning 1/100 |
| Milli- | A prefix meaning 1/1,000 |
| Ruler or meter stick | A tool used to measure length |
| Triple beam balance | A tool used to measure mass; it acts like a balancing scale |
| Graduated cylinder | A tool used to measure the volume of a liquid; it looks like a tall, skinny cup with measuring marks on the outside |
| Meniscus | The bottom of the dip at the top of a liquid in a graduated cylinder; this is where we measure from |
| Scientific Notation | A way to write really large or small numbers; has the form of a base number times 10 raised to a power |
| Significant figures | The number of digits that can be known in a measurement without question; more precise tools give readings with more significant figures |
| Prefix | Part of a word that comes before a unit to show size |
| Water displacement | The process of measuring the volume of a small solid: put some water in a graduated cylinder and measure the initial volume, then add the solid and measure the new volume - the difference between those two volumes is the volume of the solid |
