Scientific Method

Steps and Application of the scientific method

QuestionAnswer
What is the first step in the scientific method? Make an observation
What comes after making an observation? Form a question
Once a question is formed, what comes next? Make a hypothesis
When we have a hypothesis, we then have to ______________. Test it with an experiment
What is an independent variable? The variable that the scientist changes on purpose to see if it effects other things
What is a dependent variable? The variable the scientists is measuring in the experiment; it changes in response to the independent variable
What is a control variable? Variables that stay the same throughout the experiment so that we know they are not affecting the outcome
What is a control group? The group that doesn't get treatment; we consider this the "normal" group
What do scientists do if the hypothesis is supported? Retest the experiment many times to make sure they get the same result
What do scientists do if the hypothesis is not supported? Go back and change either the hypothesis or the way the experiment is done
Once scientists draw conclusions about an experiment that is done many times, they then _________________. Communicate the results with other scientists
How is a theory different from a hypothesis? A hypothesis is a possible answer to the posed question (more like a guess), but a theory has been well-tested and proven time and time again
What is a hypothesis? A possible answer to the posed question which is testable.
What is qualitative data? Data without numbers; describes quality
What is quantative data? Data with numbers; describes quantity
"I noticed that my back hurts at the end of the day" is an example of this step of the scientific method. Observation
"I wonder what is causing my back to hurt" is an example of this step of the scientific method. Question
"I think that the shoes I'm wearing are causing my back to hurt" is an example of this step of the scientific method. Hypothesis
If I do an experiment where I wear different shoes on back to back days to see how much my back hurts at the end of the day, what is the independent variable of this experiment? The different shoes
If I do an experiment where I wear different shoes on back to back days to see how much my back hurts at the end of the day, what is the dependent variable of this experiment? How much my back hurts
If I do an experiment where I wear different shoes on back to back days to see how much my back hurts at the end of the day, what are some control variables of this experiment? Same person, same amount of standing, same type of floor to stand on

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
