Ch 48. Substance Abuse

TermDefinition
Substance Use Disorder A condition in which the use of one or more substances leads to clinically significant impairment.
Impairment The decrease of strength or loss of function of a body system that results from failure to fulfill major obligations at work, school, or home, and places the person in physically hazardous situations that are aggravated by the substance.
Dependence A medical condition, commonly known as addiction that includes symptoms of overwhelming compulsive use, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms on discontinuation.
Illicit Substance Any chemical or mixture of chemicals that alters biologic function and is not required for the maintenance of health. "Illicit substances" applies primarily to illegal substances.
Intoxication The ingestion of a toxic substance (e.g., ethanol [alcohol]) to the point of clinically significant changes (e.g., impaired social or occupational functioning with excessive alcohol ingestion).
