| Term | Definition |

| Substance Use Disorder | A condition in which the use of one or more substances leads to clinically significant impairment. |
| Impairment | The decrease of strength or loss of function of a body system that results from failure to fulfill major obligations at work, school, or home, and places the person in physically hazardous situations that are aggravated by the substance. |
| Dependence | A medical condition, commonly known as addiction that includes symptoms of overwhelming compulsive use, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms on discontinuation. |
| Illicit Substance | Any chemical or mixture of chemicals that alters biologic function and is not required for the maintenance of health. "Illicit substances" applies primarily to illegal substances. |
| Intoxication | The ingestion of a toxic substance (e.g., ethanol [alcohol]) to the point of clinically significant changes (e.g., impaired social or occupational functioning with excessive alcohol ingestion). |
