brutal (adj) very hard or uncomfortable, cruel and violent
crush (v) to defeat badly or to press something so hard that it breaks or is damaged
dense (adj) crowded or very close together
dreadful (adj) extremely unpleasant or frightening
emit (v) to send out gas, heat, light, sound etc
handily (adv) easily (American English)
hypothesis (n) an idea that is suggested as an explanation for something, but that has not yet been proved to be true
indirect (adj) not directly caused by something
intervene (v) to become involved in an argument, fight, or other difficult situation in order to change what happens
justification (n) a good and acceptable reason for doing something
live within your means (phr) to spend only what you can afford
multiple (adj) many, or involving many things, people, events etc
obstacle (n) something that makes it difficult to achieve something
overlook (v) to not notice something, or not see how important it is
prospective (adj) related to future possibility of happening or coming true
radically (adv) changing a lot in an important way
reciprocal (adj) an arrangement in which two people or groups do or give the same things to each other
reign (n) the period when someone is king, queen, or emperor
retreat (v) to move away from someone or something
seemingly (adv) appearing to have a particular quality, when this may or may not be true
span (v) to extend from one point to another (either time or place)
superior (adj) better, more powerful, more effective etc than a similar person or thing, especially one that you are competing against
tempting (adj) something that seems very good and you would like to have it or do it
unambiguously (adv) describing something that is clear and easy to understand because it can only mean one thing
