5 Themes and Map Vocabulary
Term | Definition |

Compass Rose | a symbol on a map which indicates the cardinal directions |
Cardinal Directions | North, East, South, and West (Never eat sad worms) |
Intermediate Directions | Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, Northwest |
Scale | tells the user about the size of the map relation to the size of the real world |
Symbols | pictures that represent something |
Key or Legend | an area on the map that shows us what each symbol represents |
Latitude Lines | Run east to west but they measure distance on Earth in a north to south direction |
Longitude Lines | Run from north to south but they measure distance on Earth in an east-to-west direction. |
Equator | Zero degree line of latitude that separates the Northern hemisphere from the Southern hemisphere |
Prime Meridian | Starting point for measuring longitude and separates Eastern and Western hemispheres |
Grid | Intersecting lines of latitude and longitude that cover the globe |
Mercator Projection | one of the simplest projections and one of the more distorted |
Cartographer | map makers |
Robinson Project | a map projection of a world map which shows the entire world at once. |
Relief | The height of a landform compared to other nearby landforms |
Physical Map | Depict many kinds of physical features, including Mountains, lakes, and rivers| |
Political Map | Maps show political features. These are not natural or physical features, but rather features determined by people (these include state boundaries and capital cities.) |
Special Purpose Map | Shows very specific data such as climate, natural resources, and population density |
What are the 5 themes of geography? | Location, Place, Human/Environment Interactions, Movement, and Regions |
Define LOCATION | Where something is found on the Earth |
Define PLACE | Physical or human features |
Define HUMAN/ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS | Physical characteristics of a place affect how people live and people affect the environment, too (ie - blast tunnels through mountains to build roadways, etc) |
Define MOVEMENT | Geographers look at how people, products, ideas and information move from one place to another. |
Define REGIONS | Places that are close to one another and share some characteristics |
