Scientific Method

| science | the study of the natural world |
| scientists | people who study the natural world and try to figure out how it works |
| observation | to pay close attention to something and gather information using your five senses |
| investigation | how scientists answer questions and discover facts to establish truth |
| hypothesis | an educated guess that can be tested with an investigation; |
| scientific method | a process scientists follow to learn and study the world around them |
| 3 parts of a hypothesis | If, then, and because |
| qualitative data | data collected using your 5 senses |
| quantitative data | data that can be measured |
| inference | a conclusion based on evidence from observations and background knowledge |
| prediction | an educated guess on what may happen in the future |
| conclusion | a final answer to a hypothesis or question based on all the data collected from an experiment or observation |
| independent variable | the variable that the scientist changes (I change the independent variable) |
| constants | all the variables that are kept the same |
| dependent variable | what changes because the independent variable was changed |
