Review narrative elements and terms

| Narrative | a story |
| Plot | the structure of a story |
| Exposition | the beginning of a story- introduces characters and setting |
| Rising Action | the part of the story in which conflict develops and intensifies |
| Climax | the turning point of the story or most intense moment |
| Falling Action | begins to wrap up the story and leads to the end |
| Resolution | the end of the story where a theme is revealed |
| Characterization | the development of a character |
| Indirect Characterization | inferences about a character based on the way a character behaves, their thoughts, and their spoken words |
| Direct Characterization | when a narrator directly states a quality or trait about a character |
| Conflict | a struggle between opposing forces in a story |
| Internal Conflict | a conflict within the character |
| External Conflict | a conflict with an outside force |
| Theme | the moral or lesson of a story |
| Foreshadowing | when the author gives clues about what will happen next in the story |
| Symbolism | when an object represents a larger idea |
| Irony | an unexpected turn in the story |
| Narrator | the person telling the story |
| 1st Person Point of View | uses pronouns I, me, my, we, our, us and means that the narrator of the story is a character inside of the story |
| 3rd Person Limited Point of View | uses pronouns he, she, they, them, him, her and means that the narrator is outside of the story and only knows the thoughts and feelings of a SINGLE character in the story |
| 3rd Person Omniscient Point of View | uses pronouns he, she, they, them, him, her and means that the narrator is outside of the story and knows the thoughts and feelings of ALL characters in the story |
