3.3 Know how to compile a nutritionally balanced menu

TermDefinition
carbohydrates The nutrient group that provides energy in the form of calories that the body needs to be able to work. They are found in starchy and sugary foods
carbohydrates Dietary sources for this nutrient group include bread, wheat, potatoes, rice, pasta, sugar cane, sweet fruits, and honey.
proteins The nutrient group that is needed for growth and repair, and to improve immune functions. They also play an important role in making essential hormones and enzymes.
proteins Dietary sources for this nutrient group include meat, fish, eggs, beans, nuts, lentils, cheese and milk.
fats The nutrient group that is needed to provide a concentrated source of energy and to insulate the body’s organs, and also plays an important role in the absorption of vitamins.
unsaturated fats These are the healthiest kinds of fats for the body.
unsaturated fats Dietary sources of this type of fat include olive oil, sunflower oil, avocado, nuts, and oily fish.
saturated fats Dietary sources of this type of fat include fatty meat, butter, cheese, cream, biscuits, cakes and pastries.
water A nutrient that is essential for the fluid composition and proper functioning of all of the body’s organs.
water Dietary sources of this nutrient include milk, fruit juice, tea, coffee, squash, fruits and vegetables.
fibre A nutrient that has the dietary function of helping to maintain healthy digestion
fibre Dietary sources of this nutrient include wholegrain cereals, wholemeal bread, brown rice and pasta, vegetables, beans, lentils and fruits.
vitamins Chemical compounds that the body requires in small amounts, but cannot create itself, therefore they must be taken in the diet.
minerals Chemical elements that the body requires in small amounts, but cannot create itself, therefore they must be taken in the diet.
vitamins and minerals Fruit and vegetables are especially important dietary sources for these nutrients.
