Literary Genres

TermDefinition
Genre A category of literature. The main literary genres are fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama.
Nonfiction __________is based on real facts about people, places, animals, or events.
Autobiography a story about a person’s life and is written by the person who lived it.
Biography a selection about a real person's life that is written by another person.
Expository Nonfiction This type of nonfiction provides information about real-life persons, objects, or ideas. (It explains and gives facts.)
Narrative Nonfiction This type of nonfiction tells about events that really happened in the form of a story.
Interview a type of nonfiction that has one person asking questions, and another person answering the questions
Fiction stories that the author has made up
Realistic Fiction Although the people and events in this type genre are made-up, the story is possible. Believable characters engage in actions that seem truthful and the story has a reasonable outcome.
Humorous Fiction This type of fiction is funny, and it is also often realistic.
Historical Fiction combines imagination and fact, with fictional characters and plot placed in a real setting from the past. Some characters and events may be real, but some parts are also imaginary.
Mystery A type of fiction that usually has some type of crime to be solved. It may be scary or suspenseful.
Fantasy a make-believe story that could never happen in the real world. This genre often has elements of magic or imaginary creatures.
Science Fiction a kind of fantasy that uses scientific information to make a story seem more believable to the reader.
Science Fiction This genre may have stories that deal with time travel, outer space, aliens, advanced technology, or the future.
Historical Fiction This is basically realistic fiction that is set in the past.
Traditional Literature Folk tales, Fairy tales, Tall tales, Myths, and Legends are all types of _______________literature.
drama A play. It tells a story but it is written to be acted out for an audience.
Poetry a type of literature in which words are carefully chosen and arranged to create certain effects, rhythm, and emotional response (and sometimes rhyme.)
graphic novel This is not really a genre. It is a format, and it publishes books from many different genres in the style of a comic book.
science fiction A story about dinosaurs created in a lab and hatched in the future would be ______________
