UST - Module 3

Tank, Piping & Dispenser Systems

QuestionAnswer
Construction must be Made w materials that are compatible w the substance stored. Designed to prevent leaks. Protected from corrosion or other physical damage
Types of existing tanks installed prior to Jan. 11, 2018 Double wall or single wall
Single-Walled Tanks It has one wall as a barrier between the materials inside it and the outside world. This sort of tank has been discontinued because it is more susceptible to releases
Double-Walled Tanks Have an additional barrier inside the tank & a space between the two walls. Space is called the interstitial space. Includes release detection monitoring mechanisms to alert operators water has seeped in from soil or product leaked out of the inner tank
What Materials Are Tanks Made Of Tanks can be made of cathodically protected steel, fiberglass reinforced plastic, fiberglass coated steel, or they can be internally lined. Steel tanks without corrosion protection have been outlawed since 1990
What is Cathodically Protected Steel Cathodic protection is a form of corrosion protection that uses either direct electrical current sent to the tank or attached electrical anodes that endure the effects of corrosion rather than the tank itself
What is Fiberglass Coated Steel (FCS) Has a thick layer of non-corrodible material (fiberglass) mechanically bonded to the outside of the tank, protecting the outside wall from corroding. Doesn't require corrosion protection provided the tank meets the provision of UL1746
What is Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) FRP is a tank with plastic walls rather than steel and is not susceptible to corrosion by either groundwater or soil
Internal lining Owners can add internal lining to tank as additional protection against corrosion & compatibility purposes. Involves sending a contractor into an empty tank. Must be internally inspected ten years after the installation and again every five years
Steel Tank A steel tank must have sufficient wall thickness (minimum 1/8" or 0.32 centimeters) and must also be cathodically protected. Steel tanks without corrosion protection have been outlawed since 1990
Piping Material UST system piping serves three different functions: product distribution, vapor recovery, and vent pipes
4 main varieties of material Steel with cathodic protection. Fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP). Flexible piping. Semi-rigid.
Steel Piping Least common material in newer piping. Strong & durable. Expensive to install. Found in specialty systems for compatibility issues. Must be protected from corrosion w/ cathodic protection
Flexible Piping Developed in the early 1990s. Less expensive. Can bend around corners. Requires fewer connection points. May have a combination of piping...flexible piping for the product line and FRP in the vapor and vent lines
Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) Strong, durable, & corrosion resistant. Nonmetal. Rigid (non flexible). Bonded in the field. Many connections. Leaks will most likely occur at connections
Semi-Rigid Piping Semi-Rigid is an intermediate type between flexible piping and FRP. This piping does not require corrosion. This is pretty uncommon in field
UST System Piping Includes Product distribution piping. Vapor recovery piping. Vent pipe
Single-Walled Piping Typically used by older systems. Can release product directly into environment
Double-Walled Piping Req'd on all new installs after 1990. Provides an extra barrier between the product flowing thru the inner pipe & the environment surrounding the outer pipe. Interstitial space must be kept clean & dry
Double-Walled Piping (2) Must be installed at a slope so product in the interstitial space will flow to a collection point (sump). Liquid activated sensors monitor this sump & alert operators to product or groundwater present. This can trigger an alarm & shut off the pump
“Recalled” Piping Some forms of piping have been recalled. One form is the Total Containment “Enviroflex” 1st generation. This piping was never actually tested with gasoline before it came to market. After several years in contact with petroleum, it degraded
Dispenser Systems All USTs shall be equipped with under-dispenser containment (UDC) for any new dispenser system installed on or after April 11, 2016
What Is Under-Dispenser Containment (UDC) UDC is designed to catch any drips or leaks from your dispenser system. Sits underneath the dispenser & is liquid tight. Must be compatible with whatever substance is conveyed by the piping to guard against corrosion. Allow for visual inspection
When Is a Dispenser System Considered New When both it & the equipment connecting it to the UST system are installed. Equipment are check valves, shear valves, unburied risers, flexible connectors, or transitional components that are under dispenser & connect the dispenser to underground piping
