UST - Module 2

Basics of Underground Storage Tanks

QuestionAnswer
What is an UST Tanks that store hazardous materials where a MINIMUM OF 10% OF THE SYSTEM IS UNDERGROUND. Includes the tank, piping & equip't involved in aggregate
Common regulated substances in USTs Gasoline, diesel, waste oil, heating oil, kerosene, jet fuel, aviation fuel, racing fuel, & chemicals for manufacturers.
Containment sumps (Part1) A liquid-tight container protecting environment by containing leaks & spills of regulated substances from piping, dispensers, pumps, & related components in the containment area
Containment sumps (Part 2) Single walled or secondarily contained & located at the top of tank, underneath the dispenser, or at other points in the piping run
Corrosion protection Measures taken to prevent tanks and pipes from degrading due to exposure to water or soil. This includes cathodic protection, a technique to prevent corrosion of a metal surface by making that surface the cathode of an electrochemical cell
Dispensing system Equipment located aboveground that dispenses regulated substances from the UST system. A common example of this is a gas pump used to fuel cars at gas stations
Overfill prevention Equipment designed to limit the impact of a release that occurs when a tank is filled beyond its capacity, resulting in a discharge of the regulated substance to the environment. Includes alarms & emergency stop functions
Piping A hollow cylinder or tubular conduit that is constructed of non-earthen materials. The piping conveys product or vapor to and from the tanks, dispensing units, and fuel trucks
Pump(s) Equipment used to control or distribute product either to or from the tank. This can include a submersible turbine pump (STP) or containment sumps at the top of your tank or underneath your dispensing units
Release detection system (probes and sensors) (Part 1) Equipment designed to determine whether release of regulated substance has occurred from the UST system into the environment or leak has occurred in the interstitial space between the UST system & its secondary barrier or secondary containment around it
Release detection system (probes and sensors) (Part 2) Probes and sensors are placed within the UST to detect either product leaking out of, or groundwater seeping into, the tanks or pipes
Secondary containment A release prevention & release detection system for a tank or piping. This system has an inner and outer barrier with an interstitial space that is monitored for leaks. This term includes containment sumps when used for interstitial monitoring of piping
Spill prevention Equipment designed to catch any spills that occur during delivery of fuel into the tank. This often includes a spill bucket to catch any excess product that may drip from the delivery nozzle and another spill bucket inside the dispensing systems
Tank(s) (Part 1) A stationary device designed to contain an accumulation of regulated substances & constructed of non-earthen materials that provide structural support. This is the container in which the petroleum or hazardous material is actually stored
Tank(s) (Part 2) UST refers to the underground storage tank itself, but also can be used to refer to the overall system, which includes piping, containment, and other components involved in storing and dispensing product
Vapor recovery system A system designed to capture displaced vapors that emerge from inside a storage tank when a load of gasoline is delivered into the tank or when gasoline is delivered into the tank of a vehicle from a dispensing system
