Tissues
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What are the four principle types of tissues? | Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nervous |
What are primary germ layers? | Cells that form together in an orderly way within two weeks of an offspring's conception |
What are the three primary germ layers? | Endoderm, Mesoderm, ectoderm |
What is the function of epithelial tissue? | covers and protects body surfaces, moves substances in to and out of body, forms glands |
What is the function of connective tissue? | Support the body and its parts, holds the body together, transport substances, protect the body |
what is the function of muscular tissue? | produces movement, produces heat |
What is the function of nervous tissue? | Specializes in communication and integration of body parts, generates complex messages for body function. |
What is histogenesis? | When the cells in the germ layers begin to specialize and form specific tissues. |
What is a stem cell? | Undifferentiated cell formed during embryonic development. |
What are the five main components of extracellular matrix? | Water, proteins, glycoproteins, proteoglycans, polysaccharides |
What is collagen? | Strong, flexible protein fiber that forms bundles to provide flexible strength to tissues. |
What is the function of elastin? | Found in stretchy tissues, can stretch and return to its original length. |
What are the three types of epithelial membranes? | Mucus, serous, and cutaneous. |
What do cutaneous membranes make up and what is their function? | Covers body surfaces exposed to the environment, makes up the skin. |
What surfaces do serous membranes line? | Cavities not exposed to the external environment, covers organs. |
What are synovial membranes? | Membranes that line the areas between bones and joints. |
What is the function of synovial membranes? | Reduce friction between opposing bone surfaces, provides cushioning for bones and joints, helps hold joints together. |
Where are mucous membranes located? | tracts that open to the external environment. |
What is a neoplasm? | Tumor, abnormal growth of cells. |
What are the classifications of neoplasms and what do they mean? | Benign- grow very slowly, do not spread to other tissues Malignant- grow rapidly, spread to other tissues, also known as cancers |
What are carcinogens? | "cancer makers", affect genetics in some way and cause abnormal cell production. |
